My best fan moment is when I got to participate in one of the contests during halftime at a University of Illinois basketball game. I was sitting in the crowd with my brother, his wife, and my girlfriend when this guy approached me and asked how old I was. I thought it kind of strange and was wondering what the hell he was wanting. But, when I told him my age (which was over 18 at the time), he asked if I wanted to participate in a contest during halftime. I, of course, said yes. My brother’s girlfriend then chimed in and said she wanted to participate, too. But, after hearing what it was, she backed out, but convinced the guy to have me and my brother battle it out. The contest was that we had to make a shot from 5 places around the key…after making each shot, we had to run the corresponding letter out to mid-court (it was sponsored by XEROX, so we had to be the first to spell XEROX in order to win). I ended up winning by 2 letters. Best experience of my sports-watching career…to actually get to shoot baskets on the court where the Illini play. I will never forget it. A close second is when I got to play football on the field at Memorial Stadium under the Bubble when they had it there.

Cheering outside in the freezing cold during a January game in Foxboro. Sometimes, I think fans have it worse than the players because the players actually get to move around and get warm during football games.

my best fan moment was in high school. It was the basketball game where we were playing our rival team. I had a close friend on each team so i decided to get really involved in the audience. I noticed that no one was wearing our mascot costume so i asked my principle if i could go and put it on. He allowed me to do so. I danced around cheering on my team running through the stands etc. My friend on the rival team was inbounding the ball so i decided to go over and spank him on the ass. He didnt know it was me and wrestled me to the ground. we both got suspended but if i had to relive it i would do the same exact thing.

When I was a little kid, I had a family friend that worked for the Bulls. Before a game in Miami (circa January 8, 1992), he took me into the locker room to hang out with the team. Me being a huge Bulls fan thought this was the greatest thing ever, but it was not until I hit puberty until I fully understood Michael Jordan’s question of “Is this your road kid?” Following the arrival of the “road kid” MJ dropped a cool 40-8-6, Craig Hodges put up a cool trillion and the unforgettable Bob Hansen put up 2 points and 3 fouls in an unforgettable 8 minutes.

I’d like a Bulls shirt in a Large please.

I was a freshman at West Virginia University and the first football game of the year was against the ohio st. buckeyes ranked #1 at the time. The game was at night and being televised on CBS nationally. So in an attempt to stand out from the rest of the student section and get on tv I borrowed a sign from a local retailer that read “welcome to touchdown city” I wore this as a cape. I also painted my face in all blue and in gold I put the flying WV logo in the center of my face. the only problem was being a freshman and not doing a face painting before i did it all in the mirror, even the WVU logo. Yes the logo was backwards to everyone that saw me, but in the mirror it looked great i still went to the game with the logo unchanged and blamed it on the adult beverages i had consumed earlier in the day. on the opening kickoff we lost our star recruit to a season ending ACL tear and proceeded to lose to ohio st. i never painted my face again for a game as i thought i brought bad luck to WVU for have the flying WVU logo backwards.

The time: college. The event: the final basketball game of my senior year.

So my buddies and I decide that since its the final game of the season (of our senior year), that we were going to tailgate our asses off. We ended up getting about 50 people at the tailgate, and got absolutely smashed. Upon entering the basketball arena, I was approached by a guy who was entering people into a dance contest. At half court. At half time. Well, my gut reaction was an instant “no”. But, right behind me, my friends started chanting a 5-letter word that rhymes with wussy.

Sober and logical Rob would have been able to shake this off. Drunk Rob however is invincible, and would take no crap from those morons. So I entered into the contest, and realized I was the only white guy in the dance contest. The other four competitors: 2 black girls and a black guy that all could have been back-up dancers for Usher. My only strategy for winning this contest was simple: take my shirt off, twist it around my head, and spin it like a helicopter. The outcome: I got second place in the contest, one of the black girls’ phone numbers, and my college team ended up losing the game horrifically. But my street cred rose from a 2 to a high 4.

My favorite sports moment as a fan was when I was a senior at the University of Maryland in 2001. 2001 was Ralph Friedgen’s first year as head football coach and Maryland was having its best season in more than a decade. In the last game of the season, Maryland beat NC State to clinch our first ACC title since 1985. At the end of the game, I ran onto the field with the rest of the students to celebrate with the players. We soon got news that we were headed to the Orange Bowl.

My favorite fan moment was going to one of the Celtics Vs. Lakers game in LA in ’07. Being a Celtics fan I went wearing my C’s hat, a green t-shirt and a Celtics Player Jersey. I took so much shit and had so many Lakers fans get right in my face screaming how much they hated me and the Celtics. I had a few people tell me I had some pretty big balls to enter the enemies territory wearing their biggest rivals gear during such an intense series. It was awesome to watch one of the greatest sports rivalries live.

I’m a Tampa Bay Bucs fan. I went to Philadelphia to see them play in the 2002 NFC title game. It was going to be the last game ever at Veterans Stadium, and the Philly fans completely expected to win the game and were acting like total jerks on the way in. The Bucs controlled the entire game to get set up for their first ever Super Bowl win. After it was over, the Philly people were so stunned that no one bothered to try and start a fight or just flick me off. I was able to get down on the field about a half hour after the game and get my picture taken, plus I got a little piece of the Vet’s turf since they were going to tear the old dump down anyway. The Bucs closed it out the right way.

In 1999, I slept outside for tickets to the University of Maryland vs Duke basketball game (17 degrees). I was a senior at Maryland at the time and both teams sere in the top 10. Not only did I sleep out, but I missed a final. Needless to say, Maryland lost, and I had to retake the ENTIRE class over again in the winter. To top it off, I got punched by a rowdy Duke fan, after they won. What a crazy 48 hours it was. Looking back more then 10 years mater, I would do it again in a heart beat!!
