The Ugly Bug Ball, Britain’s dating site for “the aesthetically challenged,” has reason to celebrate. According to an article in the UK Telegraph, two of its members found true love and plan to get married later this year. Tom Clifford and Janine Walker met on the site just last month, but apparently four dates were all it took for the two to fall head-over-heels in love. The Ugly Bug Ball is so pleased by the union that the site is paying for the couple’s honeymoon in Wales.
But let’s back up for one second: There’s a dating site for ugly people??? How screwed up is that? Truth be told, we think that The Ugly Bug Ball is almost as lame as Beautiful People, the dating site for hot folks (which, by the way, is overrun with people who are deluding themselves as far as the measure of their own attractiveness). We’re not so naive to think that all people are created equal, but this isn’t The Invention of Lying. Just as we shouldn’t be encouraging people who have over-inflated opinions of themselves, we also shouldn’t be encouraging those who have depressingly low self-esteem either.
Tom Clifford describes himself as having “a face that makes children cry,” however, the same could be said about 90 percent of the world’s population. So while we think it’s great that these two self-described tv-dinner-and-junk-food-fanatics found love with one another, we also think people should be aware that the only difference between The Ugly Bug Ball and a site like Match.com is that the members of The Ugly Bug Ball aren’t taking strategically angled photos of themselves and lying about their height, weight and profession. But whatever you do, just please stay away from BeautifulPeople.com. Those people are tools and we hope none of them ever get married because we definitely don’t want them breeding.
