You may recall that two years ago, at the World Cup in South Africa, France stunk up the joint worse than Pepe le Pew. Star Nicholas Anelka was sent home during the group stage, the team refused to practice, and in the squad’s final game — a loss to the lowly host nation’s side — captain Patrice Evra was benched for his role in the mutiny. France finished last in its group and hopped an early flight home.

The team was in disarray, but things looked to get no better with two of its top players, Franck Ribery and Sidney Govou, facing allegations that they had enjoyed the services of an underage prostitute. Ribery, for one, had allegedly flown her to a hotel in Germany in April 2009 as a birthday present for himself.

The international soccer world went “Eeew,” then shrugged, and went on playing. In November 2011, it looked like the case was dead, with prosecutors conceding that Ribery and another player charged, Karim Benzema, had not known the girl was underage.

In August 2012, that situation changed, when Ribery and Benzema made a list of eight defendants to be tried for the crime of “aggravated pimping.”

(Ribery is married, with kids, and also a converted Muslim — le whoops.)

But what of the poor thing at the center of this scandal — the underage prostitute? She seems to be doing quite well, thank you very much. Her name is Zahia Dehar, and she’s now a lingerie designer and protege or muse to German fashion titan Karl Lagerfeld.

Yes, Algerian-born Zahia seems to be doing just fine… the first video above and some of the photos below come from Vanity Fair — and yes, she was older than 18 when they were taken (she’s now 20). Other photos are from magazines V and Liberation Next, and photo shoots by Lagerfeld and the team known as Pierre et Gilles.

Those pictures are not new. But the pictures of her wearing a black swimsuit on the beach are. They were taken a couple of weeks ago in Malibu. This may not be such a good time to be Franck Ribery or Karim Benzema — they face a 45,000 Euro fine (hah!) or three years in prison (oh, shit) if found guilty.

But if your goals are to a) sell lingerie, b) take sexy pictures for magazines, and c) cultivate an air of scandal, it is looking like a good time to be Zahia Dehar.
