The Smoking Jacket

Thank You, Mikhail Baryshnikov

In 1977, we were consumed with all things Star Wars. Your mom, however, became infatuated with a different movie that year. The Turning Point featured the film debut of Mikhail Baryshnikov, who earned an Oscar nomination for his performance as a womanizing Russian ballet dancer.

He didn’t win the award, and neither did Alec Guinness for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi (which was total bullshit). He did, however, make such an impression on your mom that she went on a ballet kick that lasted well into the following summer.

So for that, we are eternally grateful to Mr. Baryshnikov for brightening our collective childhoods. In the dance outfit that he inspired her to wear, your mom was hot!
