Look, folks — the game was a blowout. Brent Musberger is Brent Musberger. And the girl is really hot.
What, in the name of sports entertainment, do you expect the guy to do?
So Brent got a little excited over Katherine Webb, girlfriend of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, during the BCS Championship Game on Monday night. She’s freaking former Miss Alabama after all — those are supposed to be pretty.
Here’s Musberger en fuego over the ladies (McCarron’s mom too), with a little bit of chiming in from Kirk Herbstreit.
That’s not so bad! Yet ESPN felt the need to apologize, issuing the following statement: We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that.
Way to go, corporate… shame an old man for contributing the one interesting moment in the game. If we were producing that show we’d have sent a PA into the stands and hauled Katherine Webb up into the booth. Let’s see whether Musberger really loses it when he’s face to face with the goddess.
Now the mom… that does bother us a little bit. Sure it’s live TV and some garbling of words is inevitable, but there was an implication in Musberger’s words that if you’re the QB at Alabama you “get” a hot mom. Not only is the biological logic a bit skewed there (she was his mom way before he became the quarterback) but there’s also something strange about conflating scoring with a babe like Katherine and having an attractive mother. Eh, details.
If anyone should be foaming at the mouth over this, it’s Alan Webb, Katherine’s dad — and he isn’t. “On one hand, you can look at it as being kind of like the dirty old man, but I’m used to this,” he told Fox 5 Atlanta. “I think if you really look into what that he was trying to say, he was trying to be complimentary, and I think they need to give Brent a break.”
That ought to settle that, right? Katherine Webb, who attends Alabama’s arch-rival Auburn, gained 100,000 Twitter followers (@_KatherineWebb — git on it) during the game and is on the cover of today’s New York Post, by the way.
