YOU DON’T ALWAYS WANT TO JUMP ON A BANDWAGON EARLY ON. Or show up someplace way ahead of time. Like when you’re on a date, and you get there a couple of hours before you’re supposed to, like, hypothetically, you could be way too sloshed to be of any use. Is all I’m saying. Hypothetically!
The good thing about drinking holidays is that you can never start too early. Being ahead of the game makes you not so much a keener as it does an ALCOHOL GENIUS. For example, eggnog in August sounds clever. Right? Basically you’re setting a Christmastime beverage trend everyone else will feel compelled to follow! See? Genius.
Nix the ‘nog half a sec, though. Because Saturday, August 25 is National Whiskey Sour Day.
Yes there is such a thing as National Whiskey Sour Day. No, there is no such thing as Santa. Moving on.
As you know, though I am, scientifically, a girl, I am not actually a girl when it comes to cocktails. Peachy things make me think of what peach-flavored vomit tastes like, hypothetically, and I never wear getups and get pink drinks a la Sex in the City foursome, probably because I’m really no fun and always broke, but that’s neither here nor there, and also I don’t wear a lot of high heels, for the two reasons mentioned earlier in this sentence.
What I do like is a nice Whiskey Sour. Mostly because it has my two favorite words — whiskey and sour.
Me, I was born indignant. Which explains why I like it when my face puckers into a sphincter-like knot upon tasting something acidic, and how I like to keep that flavor coming. And ALSO why the warmth of some nice whiskey in my belly makes me feel a lot better about the things that oppress me, like eggnog and Santa, and Sex in the City.
Here’s a great recipe for some making of your own Whiskey Sours. Get it on it early. Take your lemon of a day and mix it into a Whiskey Sour Day. (Just throw the Maraschino cherries in the garbage for me, won’t you?)
The Whiskey Sour
1.5 ounces whiskey/bourbon/rye
Juice of half a lemon
Teaspoon of sugar
Shake all ingredients with ice, and strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with Maraschino cherry or lemon wedge.
Happy Whiskey Sour Day to you and yours!!
