It’s a good day to be a fan of big name recording artists, because there are a bunch of them dropping new albums today. Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, Radiohead (sort of) and…we think that’s it. Oh, wait! There’s a new Britney Spears album also, if that’s your kind of thing.
Let’s get to it. This is your Weekly Release for the last week of March, 2011…
Snoop Dogg – Doggumentary
Jay-Z may have declared the death of Autotune, but that’s not stopping plenty of people from trying to resurrect it. The obituary clearly wasn’t posted in whatever newspaper Snoop Dogg reads, because “Wet,” the first single from Doggumentary, is an Autotune heavy affair. It’s also heavy on the bass and, shockingly, quite heavy on the awesome. Snoop has been on a bit of an experimental streak for a few years now, and that shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Who are we to complain about that?
Wiz Khalifa – Rolling Papers
DJ Prince Paul lookalike (raise your hand if we’ve already lost you) Wiz Khalifa finally releases one of the most anticipated rap albums of the year today. Wiz is possibly the most polarizing figure in rap right now. On one side are fans who have been calling him “Rookie of the Year” for about three years now, if that makes any sense at all (it doesn’t). On the other side, a devout group of purists who have declared him a sellout before a good portion of the listening public has even heard of him. You probably already know which side of the fence you’ve planted your flag on, but if not, his major label debut is ready for your listening pleasure.
Radiohead – The King of Limbs
Wait, what? Hasn’t this album been out for a long time now? Yes, it has. But only in digital form. If you’re one of the last ten people on Earth who aren’t satisfied until you’ve paid an unreasonably high price for the music you listen to, your prayers have been answered in the form of an official CD release of The King of Limbs. Obsolescence be damned!
Britney Spears – Femme Fatale
The Britney Spears “I Promise I’m Not Insane Anymore” tour makes another stop today with the release of Femme Fatale. Laugh it up, Johnny, but keep in mind, the album is actually getting some pretty stellar reviews. Rolling Stone gave it four stars out of five, for whatever that’s worth. People are calling it her best album in years. Again, take that however you wish. We’re just letting you know the damn thing is out. Don’t shoot the messenger, y’all.
